With the killing this week of another student by an “armed intruder” at a Georgia campus – only 3 months after the killing of Georgia student Laken Riley, our school communities are searching for more effective ways to stay safe.

The recent use of a stolen 18-wheel truck and trailer to drive into a DPS Driver’s License building in Brenham, Texas had fatal consequences with one person dead and thirteen others injured.

The recent live event venue mass shooting in Russia is a reminder of the strategic focus and objectives these active shooters have – death to many, and fear to many others.

The recent Active Shooter event at Lakewood Church in Houston is a reminder of how frequently these shooters are targeting our places of worship and schools.

As we reflect on the 2023 U.S. school shootings – there were 82 as compared to the 2022 number of 79 which included the Uvalde, Texas Robb Elementary tragedy resulting in 21 fatalities.  2024 is beginning to follow this trend with 2 school shooting incidents in January.

A mental illness diagnosis with a history of threats of violence towards others or, suicidal ideation and firearms is a recipe for tragedy. The ability for persons with these mental health issues to legally purchase a firearm is predictive of deadly results.
